Recent Developments in Polymer Characterization Using X-ray Diffraction

The acknowledged versatility of polymeric materials, which are widely used in the form of plastics, films, coatings and fibers, arises from the complex structural organization in these materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD) has long been successfully used to study various aspects of these structures in semicrystalline polymers, which includes thermoplastics, thermoplastic elastomers and liquid crys...

X-ray Diffraction Characterization of Polymer Intercalated Graphite Oxide

Graphite oxide (GO) is generated by treating graphite with strong oxidizers. GO retains the structure of graphite, but with a larger and irregular basal plane spacing. The oxidation of graphite results in the formation of epoxide groups as well as C-OH and COOH groups. It is the presence of some of these moieties that allows GO to be dispersed in water, allowing for its use in waterborne formul...

Modern X-ray Diffraction Methods in Mineralogy and Geosciences

A century has passed since the first X-ray diffraction experiment (Friedrich et al. 1912). During this time, X-ray diffraction has become a commonly used technique for the identification and characterization of materials and the field has seen continuous development. Advances in the theory of diffraction, in the generation of X-rays, in techniques and data analysis tools changed the ways X-ray ...

Active-site studies of enzymes by X-ray diffraction methods.

X-Ray diffraction is the only method currently available for the determination of the detailed three-dimensional structure of macromolecules. In this article, the principles behind the use of X-ray crystallography in the study of protein structure are presented. The results obtained in its application to several enzymes are discussed, as well as the limitations of the method.
